Artists in Residence Exchange

The Artists in Residence Exchange provides a model of support for professional choreographic creativity within the Center for Flamenco Arts. Artists creating work within percussive dance forms are provided access to a stimulating environment where experimentation, exploration and artistic evolution are valued, encouraged and cultivated. Up to 2 Artists in Residence will be given 100 free hours of studio space over a 4 month period, the opportunity to discuss and receive feedback on their work in a public forum during a mid-residency session and to present their work (in whatever form that may be) during an informal showing at The Center for Flamenco Arts to culminate the residency.

ANNOUNCING THE 2020 RESIDENTS

ARIELLE ROSALES is a Bessie Award nominated Social Engagement Performance Artist specializing in Flamenco, Percussion, Theater, and Improvisation. She has performed on renowned stages of Carnegie Hall and The Joyce, featured in commercials for Nokia & Target, episodes of “The Today Show” (NBC) and “Good Morning America” (ABC). Her choreography has been featured in Man of La Mancha (Shakespeare Theatre Company, Washington DC), The Latin Quarter Show (REVEL Casino & Resort, Atlantic City), and Mrs. Doubtfire on Broadway (Stephen Sondheim Theatre, NYC). She is the Founder of @houseofduende, Repique Player with @batalanewyork, and is Co-Founder & Principal Dancer with @solesofduende who have received commissioned residencies with Dixon Place and Gibney Dance for their full length production Can We Dance Here? For 30 years, MARTHA ZARATE-ALVAREZ has actively participated in Mexican folkloric dance throughout the Americas and Europe. She assumed various roles including associate artistic director, choreographer, instructor, principal dancer, costume & props designer. Martha’s focus on research, instruction and artistic direction led to founding MazArte Dance Company, fulfilling her vision of creating a tangible union between dance, research, and authentic indigenous art. MazArte creates awareness about diversity in Mexican cultural heritage while preserving artistic techniques in danger of being forgotten and lost. Through educational performances and programming, MDC educates our communities, provides opportunities for artists, and fosters an inclusive environment for audiences. Martha’s pedagogical training was at Escuela Normal de Puebla, specializing in teaching dance and history.
