Created by Michelle Dorrance, Derick K. Grant, Toshi Reagon, and Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, THE BLUES PROJECT brings together today's best tap artists, musicians, and choreographers in an innovative evening of rhythm, original live music, explosive energy, and raw emotion. Combining exceptional tap dance company DORRANCE DANCE with the elemental musical force that is TOSHI REAGON & BIGLOVELY, the work reveals "a deep merging of forms: As Ms. Reagon's music envelops the dancing, the dancing seeps through to the last chord and sometimes even beyond it." (The New York Times)

Dorrance Dance, founded by Artistic Director and  2015 MacArthur Fellow MICHELLE DORRANCE, aims to honor tap dance's uniquely beautiful history in a new and compelling context by expanding on its tradition to push it forward—rhythmically, technically, and conceptually. Following the company’s inaugural performance in 2011 that garnered a Bessie Award for "blasting open our notions of tap," Dorrance Dance has performed at major venues and festivals across the United States and around the world to wide acclaim.

Toshi Reagon has moved audiences of all kinds with her big-hearted, hold-nothing-back approach to rock, blues, R&B, country, folk, spirituals, and funk. Her band BIGLovely has been an NYC institution since 1996, and she has shared stages with the likes of Nona Hendryx, Elvis Costello, Ani DiFranco, Pete Seeger, Dar Williams, Lizz Wright, and Me'shell NdegéOcello. Her performances with her mother, Bernice Johnson Reagon, a civil rights activist and founder of the a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock, are legendary.

Join us after the show for a special reception with artist Grimanesa Amorós at 9PM. As part of its 40th year anniversary season, BRIC has commissioned HEDERA, a monumental light sculpture by interdisciplinary New York-based Peruvian artist Grimanesa Amorós, which is on display all summer long. On Thursday, June 28, stay at the Bandshell after the performance for this event, which is free and open to the public. The event will include the following:

  • A brief discussion with artist Grimanesa Amorós, led by Elizabeth Ferrer, Vice President of Contemporary Art at BRIC.
  • An audience Q&A.
  • Toast with the artist (a cash bar will be available during the event).
