Call for Emerging Choreographers & Dance Filmmakers

Instituto Coreográfico
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
RESIDENCY FOR EMERGING CHOREOGRAPHERS AND DANCE FILMMAKERS
October 3rd-14th, 2011

APPLICATIONS DUE FRIDAY JULY 29TH @ 5:00 PM

For Choreographers:
The Instituto Coreografíco provides emerging choreographers a professional and supportive environment in which to explore their heritage through the creation of Dance.  That support includes: 60 hours of studio time working with the Ballet Hispanico Company dancers; an appointed mentor with whom to discuss the art making process; access to resources at New York University through the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies; sharing the work for constructive feedback from leaders in the dance field; video footage of the rehearsal process; a work sample on DVD; and a stipend.  We are looking for choreographers who have set work only on companies with budgets of $1.5M or less and have a demonstrated interest in creating culturally specific work based on their own background and experience.

For Filmmakers:
Filmmakers will be paired with the choreographer and will be provided with a professional and supportive environment in which to develop their craft.  That support includes being mentored by Gerrit Vooren. He has over 25 years of experience as a dancer and filmmaker and is the founder of reels4artists. Filmmakers will share their work for constructive feedback, and receive a small stipend for their time documenting the choreographic process.  We are looking for filmmakers who are particularly interested in learning the unique skill of capturing the multi-dimensions of dance and the dance making process.

All applicants must:
•    Be at least 18 years old
•    Have fewer than 5 years of professional choreographic or filmmaking experience
•    Be open to working with an emerging artist from the other discipline (each choreographer will work with a filmmaker)

Applications must include:
•    Cover Sheet
•    500-word artistic statement defining goals for working with a company like Ballet Hispanico
•    A project description
•    5-10 minute clip of work (in studio or fully produced, DVD or video link accepted)
•    Current resume
•    Three references

Deadline:  Friday July 29th 5:00 pm via mail, e-mail. Mail must be postmarked July 29th.

About Ballet Hispanico:
Ballet Hispanico is the nation’s preeminent Hispanic-American dance organization.  Ballet Hispanico explores, preserves, and celebrates Latino cultures through dance. The mission unfolds in the work of the professional Company, the School of Dance, and the Education & Outreach programs. Together, these divisions celebrate the dynamic aesthetics of the Hispanic diaspora, building new avenues of cultural dialogue and sharing the joy of dance with all communities.

About Instituto Coreográfico:
As the growing Latino populations impacts the local and national cultural landscape, it is imperative to engage artists who wrestle with the changing concept of cultural work.  Our ambition is that the Instituto Coreográfico will enhance the skill set and broaden the cultural perspective on emerging choreographers and dance filmmakers.  Artistic Director, Eduardo Vilaro, created the Instituto in order to foster dialogue about the experience, and express through dance the complexity of the diasporas.

The Instituto Coreográfico is made possible with leadership support from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the Ford Foundation, as well as additional support from Pam Crutchfield.  We thank New York University’s Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies for providing research and library support for this project.
