Class Description: This class will offer an introduction to the study of the popular dance styles in Africa called Afrobeat. Highlights of this class will include warm-up where students will get initiated through various Afrobeat steps such as Rosalina, Akwaaba, Shaku Shaku, Vosho, Pilolo, Azonto and Gwara gwara; these are some of the moves that are consistently called upon to create new dances.
This will help students become better acquainted with rhythm and the different styles of the discipline leading them into smooth transition to more technical and complex moves to be learned throughout the class.

Teacher Bio: Born and raised in Ghana, West Africa. He moved to the Netherlands at the age of 11. After high school and graduating from CIOS (sports academy) he attended Amsterdam School of Arts and graduated in June 2008. He came to the Alvin Ailey School in 2007 as an exchange student where he received a fellowship to study. He was also member of the Student Performing Group at the Alvin Ailey School. Clement is a former member of the Kisshoffmoves Company based in Amsterdam. He has apprenticed at the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. He has also been part of the Francesca Harper Project and danced with the Elisa Monte Dance from 2008 until 2010. Mr. Mensah, a former member of Transitions Dance Company at Trinity Laban School of Contemporary Dance in London, where he received his MA degree in Dance Performance and joined Ronald K. Brown/Evidence A Dance Company in September 2011 after returning to New York. Mr. Mensah was a member of Battery Dance Company from 2012-2018 where he stars in the award-winning documentary Moving Stories with his teaching and performances skills. He founded Tikoro formally known as Off the Radar project in 2014 and is currently working with the Equus Project and has been part of Reggie Wilson Fist and Heel Performance Group since 2011. Mr. Mensah teaches contemporary at SLK Ballet School based in NYC and is the choreographer in residence with Chevalier Ballet the Official Company of The Strand Theatre and of SLK Ballet School.
