DANCE IN THE ROUND

Dance In The Round workshop Mansura Khanum

GIBNEY DANCE CENTER
STUDIO V
SATURDAY JUNE 15, 3:00-5:00p

Choreographer Parijat Desai offers DANCE IN THE ROUND, an inclusive dance workshop, in partnership with GIBNEY

WHAT IS DITR?
Dance In The Round is program created by choreographer/dancer Parijat Desai to share the transformative collective dance experience of Garba and Raas—circle dances from Gujarat, India—in a variety of spaces and communities. Parijat’s public Dance In The Round events are open to all ages and levels.**

This edition of Dance In The Round is supported by Gibney’s Moving Toward Justice Cohort, which supports high-potential projects that use art as a tool for activism and social impact.

WHAT WILL IT BE LIKE?
Choreographer/dancer Parijat Desai will lead a gentle and invigorating warmup, and guide participants into the basic steps of Garba. Before you know it, you'll be traveling around the circle.

Parijat will be joined by dancers who help demonstrate and support new folks. We’ll also be accompanied by a percussionist, and fun Garba music tracks. We'll conclude the workshop with learning Raas (dandiya or sticks).

Already know how to Garba? This is for you too! When we move in concentric circles, there’s space for all. And we need you to help raise the energy! Why wait ’til Navratri to show off your moves?

As part of our session, Parijat will share about her Moving Toward Justice project to create a model for working with advocacy and justice organizations. With MTJ support, Parijat is collaborating with Queens-based community org Chhaya CDC to use dance to support to their housing and immigrant-rights work.
