Kutiro/Bougarabou Dance Class

Kutiro/Bougarabou Taught by Malang Bayo and Bakary Fall

Kutiro dance and music originates from the Jola (Diola) people of Casamance in southern Senegal. Named for the drum used to play the dance’s rhythms, the kutiro family of dances are fast-paced with intricate footwork. Traditionally performed for ceremonies, this dance’s high-energy movements are rooted in the legs and core, but integrate the entire body.

Those dances are often accompany by a bougarabou player as well, a traditional drum of the Diola of Southern Senegal. The bougarabou is a set of 1 to 4 drums. They have a full, deep, rich sound and produce a kind of bass melody in the total rhythm
