MOPDC's Winter Intensive: Dance, Choreograph, Envision
January 19 – January 21, 2019 @ Barnard College, NYC
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend

MOPDC's 5th Annual weekend Winter Intensive offers intermediate/advanced dancers the opportunity to explore and connect with various dances of the African Diaspora, tools for creating socially conscious choreography, and experiential insight as to ways in which Dances of the African Diaspora can be incorporated in Dance Theater.

2019 Guest Artists: In honor of our 5th year we welcome back....

3 days of rotating Technique Workshops in: Contemporary, House, Simonson Jazz, Afro-Brazilian, Danza Contemporanea de Cuba, Soca, conTEXTual rhythms, and Improvisation/Diasporic Modalities. Workshops led by Special Guest Artists along with MOPDC company members including Artistic Director, Bessie Award winning choreographer, Joya Powell! Each day will start with 2-3 technique classes for a total of 8 classes for the entire weekend. 

Choreography Lab: Creating Socially Conscious Dance Theater Choreography facilitated by MOPDC company members. Each day will conclude with 3 hours of collaborative group choreography making or solo work, where participants will be lead through MOPDC's best practices in creating Socially Conscious Choreography.

MOPDC Company Repertory: Our company repertory classes offer participants the experience in our process of creating socially conscious choreography while learning excerpts of our current repertorychoreography. Dancers will get the opportunity to perform these excerpts in our studio sharing. For students not interested in creating their own choreography.

Studio Sharing: The Intensive will culminate in a free informal studio sharing of participants work and excerpts of MOPDC company repertory. Full intensive participants will get the chance to discuss their process and receive audience feedback. Monday, January 21st @ 7pm.

$175 + tax for the FULL INTENSIVE: 8 technique classes, choreography lab/repertory + sharing w/ photo|video and audience feedback notes
$200 AFTER DECEMBER 19TH

$80 + tax for the 8 TECHNIQUE CLASSES only
$100 AFTER DECEMBER 19TH

MOPDC's Winter Intensive is for dancers and choreographers 18+ who are interested in embodying various dances of the African Diaspora as well as envisioning and creating evocative Dance Theater choreography that addresses sociocultural issues as a means to educate, inform and ignite dialogue.

Past Guest Artists include: Urban Bush Women, Nia Love, Katiti King, Arcell Cabuag, Jennifer Archibald, Ni'Ja Whitson, Marcea Daiter, Eto'o Tsana, Maguette Camara, Sekou Heru, Dandha da Hora, Legacy Women, Adia Whitaker, Candace Thompson-Zachery and Benny Simon.
