Master Haitian Contemporary Dance Class

Featuring Jean-Aurel Maurice with live Haitian drum accompaniment

Jean-Aurel Maurice was born in Saint Martin to Haitian parents and began dancing at the lakou (vodou temple) of his mother which allowed him to familiarize himselfwith Haitian drums at an early age. He has danced with Dance Theatre of Harlem, Berlin Opera Ballet, Forces of Nature and Paris Opera Garnier, among others around the world. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Paris has awarded him the status of Lauréat Lavoisier.  In 2003, Jean-Aurel established himself in Jacmel (South East of Haiti), where he directed a distinguished community dance program: EXADANS. His work as a dancer/choreographer is a complete synthesis of classical ballet, Haitian dances, theater and martial arts.
