TRISKELION ARTS presents

2nd Best Dance Company

June 13 - 15, 2019, 8pm

Triskelion Arts’ Muriel Schulman Theater
106 Calyer Street, Brooklyn, NY 11222 – Enter on Banker Street

Brooklyn, NY – Triskelion Arts is pleased to present 2nd Best Dance Company’s new evening-length work, RED. This work walks the fuzzy, shag-carpet line between dance performance and narrative play, leaning into both text and movement to tell an abstracted version of a well known fictional story of survival: Little Red Riding Hood. By cycling through distinct characters, either true to the original story or entirely new, 2nd Best Dance Company will explore how we confront the many-faced “big bads” that lurk on our personal wooded paths. In RED (choreographed, written, and directed by Hannah Garner), four performers brave the unknown by way of spectacle, sentimentality, glamour, mortality, and answering the phone.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

2nd Best Dance Company is a NYC based company, founded in 2015 by artistic director, performer, and choreographer Hannah Garner. 2nd Best is interested in how conceptual questions manifest in movement and how movement can effectively move an audience. Pursuing these interests, the company’s work has gone past the traditional dance proscenium to include collaborations in sculpture, animation, theater, film, and site-specific works. Recent credits include Gallim x create:ART Artist in Residence (2018) and commissioned choreographer by SUNY Purchase College (2018) for their spring season.

Hannah continues to be a guest teaching artist at Purchase College. ‘Housewarming’, a collaborative evening length site-specific work with Ryan Yamauchi, was recently commissioned by NJ nonprofit Arts by the People after two runs of the show out of Hannah and Ryan’s shared Harlem apartment (September 2017-July 2018). In addition 2nd Best’s work has been commissioned by Hudson Valley dance company, A-Y / Dancers (August-October 2018), and can be seen in music videos for artists like Half Waif (February 2018) and Frankie Cosmos (July 2018) and in the world premiere of off-broadway play ‘Honors Students’ by Rae Mariah MacCarthy (The Wild Project, 2018). 2nd Best productions have been presented through Gallim Dance (2018), Purchase College (2018), Arts by the People (2018), Mark Morris Dance Group/Duffy Performance Space (2017), the Howland Cultural Center (2018), Triskelion Arts/Muriel Schulman Theater (2019, 2017, 2016), Friends Seminary (2017), Dixon Place (2017, 2016), The Wassaic Project (2018, 2016), WOW CafeI? Theatre for The New York International Fringe Festival (2016), Chen Dance Center (2016), and more. 2nd Best is currently the 2019 Resident Artist at Triskelion Arts where they host affordable technique class in preparation for the premiere RED. 2nd Best continues to seek multidisciplinary partnerships, explore limits of the body, and find solace in the humor of being human. 2ndbestdance.com

“...surprising, smart, poetic; a roller coaster of intimacy, playfulness, humor and violence...There [is] the visible impact of when the unsaid is expressed, as well as the absurd things we say when trying to sculpt into words the murky, vitamin-rich mud at the bottom of our mind’s ocean.” Community of Motion (on Housewarming: a site-specific performance)

“...brings benevolence and humanity to the stage with effortlessness and generosity.” Theater Is Easy! THEASY.com (on HONORS STUDENTS)
