"BECOMING BAIRA" continues the journey from the company’s recent duet, "FLOYD" (July 2017), a journal-esque/voyeuristic peer-into the lives, experiences, and perspectives of Shaina Branfman and Bryan Strimpel (now, Mr. & Mrs. Baira). The couple share their life practice through rigorous movement vocabulary, highly calculated partnering material, and a deeply personal theatricality, exposing curiosities about the cause and effects bodies have on each other over time and questioning the options we have as individuals to cope with that weight.
BS Movement is the collected and ongoing research of collaborative/creative duo Shaina Branfman Baira and Bryan Strimpel Baira. BS Movement shares their research on movement and philosophy through choreography, performance, and teaching. Branfman completed her certification as a Movement Analyst at the Laban Institute of Movement Studies. She studied religion and philosophy at the All Faiths Seminary International and is a member of The Feath3r Theory. Strimpel has danced with Nicholas Leichter Dance, Brian Brooks Moving Company, David Dorfman Dance, ThirdRailProjects, and is a member of The Feath3r Theory. Currently, the couple teach regularly throughout NYC. Branfman and Strimpel have been creating and sharing their work together since 2014 when their piece, “Bench Duet” was selected as the DanceNOW at Joe’s Pub Challenge Winner. They were the recipients of a 30-hour space grant through A.R.T. NY and are currently participating in Pentacle’s two-year research and artist capacity-building program, Administrative Resource Team (A.R.T.). They are spending the current season as participants of Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Workspace Program, diving deeper into their founding statement: No matter our differences, we all move, so we’re all the same.
