The Playground NYC allows dancers to experience various choreographic styles and ideas, engage with a new community of dancers, and gather resourceful information and inspiration from the array of choreographers involved. In turn, established choreographers are paid for their creative investigations, are given free space to explore new movement with professional dancers, and are provided with the opportunity to establish relationships with new dancers and fellow choreographers.  

 

Bio:
He is founding artistic director of Abarukas and an award-winning choreographer. He hailed from Japan to New York at the age of 19 and started dancing a year later. He received B.A. in Dance as a scholarship student from Manhattanville College in Purchase NY. He completed a professional training program at the Martha Graham School where he had an opportunity to dance with Robert Battle, and many more. He won the International Choreographic Competition at NW Dance Project in the US in 2015 and in 2017 he was awarded for Best Choreography Award in Italy by FINI Dance. He's appeared on television and his work has been featured on NY1 & Bric TV of Spectrum Cable Channel. He's been commissioned to create a work by Jamaica Performing Arts Center in 2016, followed by a residency at Kaatsbaan International Dance Center. His work was performed in Germany, Poland, Italy and the U.S. venues including BAM Fisher, Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out Series, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater, LaMama, APAP Showcase at Peridance, Baruch Performing Arts Center, 92nd Y, and a number of universities in the U.S.  Broadway Dance World describes, “I witnessed a true work of art...Mr. Sakuraba's brilliant mind for choreography has captivated me... extreme creativity, fine detail, and high level dancing."
