Dance/NYC's Junior Committee Is Accepting Applications Through May 15

The Dance/NYC Junior Committee is accepting applications for new members, now through May 15, 2013.

The Junior Committee is a proactive working committee of emerging leaders in the field that initiates significant projects in research, advocacy, and career development while strengthening each member’s relationship to the dance community. A project of Dance/NYC, the Junior Committee serves as a catalyst for innovation and invention in the dance field. Members generate ideas through dialogue and move those ideas into action.

The Junior Committee comprises up to 20 members, ages 21-30, who represent various roles within the NYC dance community. In order to more effectively represent its peer group in the future, the current committee is working to more accurately reflect a multicultural city within its membership. With the belief that diverse perspectives are necessary to prepare a new generation of dance leadership for the difficult challenges facing the field, the committee is actively seeking applicants who are dedicated to moving the issue of diversity in dance from an ideological discussion into action. People of color are encouraged to apply.

The 2013-14 term of service runs from July 1, 2013 through July 8, 2014, and the full committee meets from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm every first Tuesday of each month (schedule modifications are made when these dates fall on holidays). Meetings typically take place at Dance/NYC’s office at 218 East 18th Street (between 2nd and 3rd avenues).

In addition to monthly meetings, Junior Committee members are required to select one “think tank” on which to serve throughout the year. Think tanks focus on specific areas of interest determined by the full committee at the beginning of the term and meet once per month. Members may also be nominated to serve on one of two small steering committees. These committees also meet once per month and focus on committee structure or research. Each individual typically commits approximately 12 hours of volunteer work per month.

Junior Committee members past and present have cited their years on the committee as inspiring as well beneficial — both personally and professionally. Highlights of service include: opportunities to present and facilitate panels or discussions at events such as the Dance/NYC Symposium, City Council hearings, and Junior Committee Town Halls; participating in candid and stimulating discussions that move the dance field forward; and becoming a part of a networked group willing to share skills, resources, experience and contacts with one another.

Applications are now available online and will be accepted through May 15, 2013.

Finalists will be notified and interviewed in June, and acceptances will be made by the beginning of July. Those who are selected will attend an orientation welcome session and meet with the full committee for two summer planning sessions in July. the Junior Committee will convene for its first meeting of the year in August.

In order to qualify for application, individuals must not be enrolled in undergraduate studies during their year on the committee. Candidates graduating in May 2013 are welcome to apply. Individuals who will turn 31 during their year of service are also not eligible to apply for this year’s committee.
