Dance/NYC Celebrates 2011

Seasons greetings from Dance/NYC!

Dance/NYC is re-imagining its role as a voice and strategic partner to New York City dance as, we believe, the industry is re-imagining itself—because there is opportunity to do so.

As we look ahead to 2012, we celebrate Dance/NYC’s achievements and some special moments from 2011. Here are 11:

Dance/NYC…

1) Publishes State of NYC Dance, extending its legacy of pioneering research. Read more in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

2) Moves to the Mertz Gilmore Foundation, making a new home for NYC dance.

3) Joins the New York City Arts Coalition to launch Fifty Years, Fifty Stories, a multimedia campaign for the New York State Council on the Arts’ 50th anniversary. Stuart Elliott of The New York Times calls it “State of the New York Arts.”

4) Co-presents the New York Live Arts Community Welcome Session.

5) As producing partner, brings The New York Dance and Performance Awards (The Bessies) to the legendary Apollo Theater. Read about the awards and recognized artists in The New York Times.

6) Responds to the Dance/USA Taskforce on Dancer Health’s call to action to achieve the dancer aesthetic while promoting wellness. Hear New York City Ballet Principal Jenifer Ringer’s remarks at our town hall.

7) Kicks off strategic planning for 2012-2014 with 371 constituents and stakeholders. Click here for content from fiveCommunity Conversations, described by one expert as “strategic planning for the Internet era.”

8) Shares the stage with the Tisch Dance Alumni Association and David Hallberg for a discussion of Jennifer Homans’ Apollo’s Angels. Click here for a clip of Homans’ dancing with Jacques D'Amboise at our gathering.

9) Travels with its Junior Committee to Mount Tremper Arts for the Committee’s first-ever professional development retreat.

10) Hosts a celebration for Beverly D’Anne with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, American Ballet Theatre, Joyce Theater and New York City Ballet. Read Beverly’s statement to the field.

11) Through the Dance/NYC Junior Committee, attracts over 1,200 respondents to a Dance Workforce Censusfor the Committee’s relative peers, New York City dance workers, ages 21-35. Stay tuned for findings, preparing us to lead the future of dance.

These moments and substantive fundraising, programmatic and administrative growth have been made possible because we have patrons and partners like you. I invite you to join us and be the change you want to see in New York City dance.

And I invite you to help strengthen Dance/NYC by making a gift now:

Donate to Dance/NYC

100% of your contribution is tax-deductible and will go directly to Dance/NYC’s programs in 2012.

I have just crossed my one-year mark on the job and could not be more proud of what we are making possible for dance. With your help, I know we will succeed.

Onward.
