NWI invites innovative dance and multidisciplinary artists to develop new dance-performance work for Montclair State University’s 2012-13 season of dance performances. Preference will be given to projects that combine dance with text using both student dancers and actors.

NWI aims to make MSU a home for the American performance community to experiment and develop their most ambitious ideas using students as an integral part of the process. This year our primary focus is on the creation of new dance work that is interdisciplinary in nature using both movement and text.

One NWI project will be chosen each year, based upon national submission for workshop development on the Montclair State University campus. The creative artist will be supported through artist fees, dedicated rehearsal space, stage management support and an auditioned student cast. Rehearsals and performance will take place during the 2012-13 academic year.

NWI launched in the spring of 2010 with playwright Jason Grote and composer Marisa Michelson developing a new musical based on Grote’s play, 1001. In 2011, we presented a workshop version of The Agee/Evans Project created by playwright Molly Rice, composer Stephanie Johnstone and director Rachel Chavkin. Our most recent project is a dance/theatre work by Chase Brock entitled we love you get up.
