Modern Afro-Cuban Class

Modern Afro-Cuban with Noibis Licea @ The Ailey Extension

Cuba possesses a wealth of African-derived dance traditions. This open-level class will introduce students to the rich vocabulary and technique of Afro-Cuban sacred and social dance, including those of the Orishas, deities of the Yoruba-based syncretic religion known in Cuba as Osha/Santo/Lukumi, Palo/Kongo, from the Bantu-speaking people of Central Africa and Arará, of the Ewe-fon, among others. Cuba’s secular, celebratory and popular dances such as Yuka/Makuta, the Rumba complex (Yambu, Guaguancó,and Columbia), and Son (ancestor of today’s Salsa/Mambo), will also be discussed and explored.

Join Noibis Licea, a Cuban native, graduate of the prestigious Escuela Nacional de Arte (ENA) in Havana, and an MFA in Dance and Choreography from New York University (NYU), for movement education that celebrates spirit, perseverance, and living history.
