Apply for a 2016 boo-koo Residency at Gibney Dance

Apply for a 2016 boo-koo Residency at Gibney Dance Jesse Zaritt and Jumatatu Poe by Scott Shaw

boo-koo is Gibney Dance’s space grant and community giveback initiative for early- to mid-career dance and performance artists. boo-koo is slang for the French word beaucoup, meaning “much” or “a lot.” Our space grant program embraces the notion that our community is abundant with talent and ingenuity and attempts to harness the power of reciprocity and resource sharing.

In this spirit, Gibney Dance will provide 6 artists with 50 hours of free space to develop new work. Artists will also receive a $1,000 stipend to enhance their creative process as well as mentorship and administrative support. In exchange, participating artists will “give back” by designing and implementing a special project that will serve the dance or social justice communities.

The six selected boo-koo artists will also meet once a month as a cohort with Gibney staff members, including our Director of Programs, Craig Peterson. At these meetings, boo-koo artists will share work with each other, discuss issues in the field that feel pertinent to their lives as artists, and develop skills to help move their careers forward.

HOW TO APPLY

We are implementing a two-tiered application process for the first time this year. Artists will be able to submit a very brief ‘Intent to Apply’ online form any time before February 19 at 12:00 pm. From that pool, 40 eligible artists will be randomly selected to submit a full application. From those 40 artists, our panel will select 6 for the 2016 boo-koo cycle.

Eligibility

The boo-koo residency program supports the creation of new work from early- to mid-career dance and performance artists working in New York. Artists must meet the following eligibility requirements:

1. May not have previously received a boo-koo residency.
2. Must live in New York City or its surrounding boroughs.
3. May not be currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program at a university.
