Director of the Bates Dance Festival

Bates College invites applications for the position of Director of the Bates Dance Festival, an internationally renowned summer program celebrating its 35th anniversary of bringing together a diverse community of international choreographers, performers, educators, and students in a cooperative environment to study, perform, and incubate new work. Serving as a leader in the development and exposition of the performing arts on campus and throughout the world of dance, the Director is the producer, artistic curator, coordinator, and manager of a contemporary dance program that combines academic excellence, innovative programming, and community engagement.
The Director’s chief responsibilities include:
Curation of a diverse, collegial, and internationally distinctive summer dance education program and performance series
Artist recruitment and relationship management
Student recruitment and admission
Strategic planning
Fundraising (in consultation with the college’s Office of Advancement)
Integration of Festival artists into the college’s academic-year programming
Advancement of the broader campus mission of diversity and inclusion, including in recruiting artists, performers, and students, and in program development
Supervision of staff and interns
The directorship may include opportunities to teach depending on the needs of the college and the experience and training of the Director.
Desired qualifications of the new Director:
Significant experience as an arts administrator with curatorial, operational, and arts advocacy experience
Executive and management skills
Collaborative skills and experience
Strong fundraising experience
Experience or interest in arts integration within a highly selective, small liberal arts college
Leadership experience and skills to build on current program strengths, generate new ideas, work collaboratively to reach program goals, and fortify the Dance Festival’s national and international reputation while remaining committed to local and statewide communities
Commitment to building community through the arts
Leadership to advance Bates College’s mission of diversity
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
