Emerging Artist Residencies

Periapsis Music and Dance in rehearsal In rehearsal, spring 2017

Emerging Artist Residencies for Choreographers and Composers:

What this is: This program is an opportunity for two pairs of emerging choreographers and composers to develop new work on a subset of Periapsis Music and Dance’s ensemble of dancers and musicians over a period of seven days.  Selected participants will receive rehearsal time with the artists, two workshop sessions with guest teacher Tiffany Rea-Fisher, including a work-in-progress showing at the end of the residency, and a small stipend to offset costs of attending.  It is possible that one or both works may be selected to be expanded into a commission for the 2018-2019 season.

When and where: This will take place weekday evenings (7pm-10pm) from May 29 to June 6, 2018.  Sessions will be in dance studios at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in the East Village.

Eligibility: Choreographers and composers must

- be emerging artists in the early stages of their career (there is no age limit);
- not be enrolled in any degree-granting institution at the time of the residency (ABD is okay);
- be based primarily in New York City;
- be able to attend the entire 7-evening program (no exceptions);
- demonstrate significant artistic potential based on previous work;
- embrace the idea of creating work in a highly collaborative environment.

A jury of at least three composers and choreographers will select the participants.

Note to choreographers: We maintain a wide stylistic diversity within a modern/contemporary dance idiom, so your work samples should demonstrate ability within that genre (i.e.—if you only submit ballet choreography, it will be hard for us to tell how you would create for our ensemble).

Note to composers: Our core ensemble consists of violin, viola, cello, clarinet, percussion, and piano, and your work would be for 1-2 players within that instrumentation.  Your work samples should demonstrate score-based, solo/chamber writing.

Note to both: Choreographers and composers may apply as a pair, but you will be evaluated separately and would need to both be accepted to be able to work together.  You would each fill out your own application, and there is a field on the form to indicate that you’re applying with a partner.

Timeline:

- February 4, 2018: Applications close
- February 28, 2017: Notification of results
- Spring, 2018: Selected participants discuss preliminary ideas with the artistic director to settle questions of instrumentation and basic casting (specific dancers and musicians may not be known until later). Composers create a draft of their score in close consultation with choreographers.
- May 15: First draft of musical score and parts are due
- May 29-31: Rehearsals
- June 1: First workshop session with Tiffany Rea-Fisher (open to the public)
- June 4-5: Further rehearsals (may be open to guests)
- June 6: Work-in-progress studio showing, including public workshop session with Tiffany Rea-Fisher and audience talkback

With both composer and choreographer involved with all the rehearsals, we expect the music to develop alongside the choreography, and we encourage all artists to move outside of their comfort zone and explore new processes.  Our pilot program in June, 2017, was a meaningful experience for all involved.  Choreographers Wendell Gray II and Angie Moon, and composers Anne Leilehua Lanzilotti and Kevin McCarter were chosen through a competitive application process, and Janis Brenner coached the groups as guest teacher.  The work by Wendell and Anne will be programmed as part of Periapsis Music and Dance’s 2018 season.  This is a truly unique opportunity, and we can’t wait to see the work that it inspires!

We are excited to welcome Tiffany Rea-Fisher as our guest teacher to guide the creation of these new works.  Artistic director of Elisa Monte Dance and founder of Inception to Exhibition (ITE), Tiffany is a prolific artist and teacher, and a dynamic presence in the dance community.  You can learn more about her here.

APPLICATIONS ARE DUE FEBRUARY 4, 11:59 PM EST.  APPLY HERE.
