Merce Cunningham Trust Archives Internship

Merce Cunningham Annie Leibovitz

The Merce Cunningham Trust is an organization dedicated to preserving the work and memory of one of the most acclaimed and innovative choreographers of the past 100 years, Merce Cunningham. Merce Cunningham was at the forefront of the world of dance the entirety of his 70-year career and collaborated with many of the most notable artists of his time, including musicians John Cage, Pauline Oliveros, and Radiohead, artists Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, video pioneers Nam June Paik and Charles Atlas, and men and women at the forefront of digital art and dance.

The Trust is seeking an intern able to make a 3 to 6 month commitment to work a minimum of 8 hours per week. The intern will assist the archivist and other members of the Trust’s small staff in working to preserve Cunningham’s contribution to our cultural heritage as we prepare for events surrounding the centennial of his birth in 2019. The intern will receive hands-on experience in the archives of an active, internationally-known arts organization, and the Trust will make all efforts to tailor the intern’s role to his or her educational interests.

Tasks will include the digitization and organization of archival materials, aiding in the optimization of the Trust’s digital asset management system, and performing research on rare and under-documented events; and assisting in the presentation of Cunningham’s audiovisual and born-digital materials. Interest and experience in dance, archives and record-keeping, and avant-garde music is desired but not required.

While the internship will be unpaid, the intern will be able to attend Cunningham classes free of charge and can arrange for school credit at his or her college or university if so desired.

Interested parties may send a cover letter and résumé to Benjamin Houtman at bhoutman@mercecunningham.org.
