NimbusPRESENTS: OFFLINE Pro Arts - Site/Moment

Choreographic Residency, Curated Performance, and Site Specific Installation

Now entering its 9th cycle, OFFLINE is a series of curated performances presenting the work of emerging to mid-career choreographers from the New Jersey/New York area. Designed to bring new dance to Jersey City audiences and address the limited space available for dance creation and performance in Jersey City, OFFLINE draws audiences and artists together for intimate and meaningful dance exchanges. For this cycle of OFFLINE, Curators Stephanie Daniels (of Pro Arts Jersey City) and Samuel Pott (Artistic Director of Nimbus Dance Works) will select choreography and choreographers whose work demonstrates a multidisciplinary approach. Following each show, Samuel Pott and Stephanie Daniels will lead an artist talkback with participating choreographers.

2 resident choreographers and 6 choreographers for performance only will be selected to present their work at Nimbus' Studio/Theater in Downtown Jersey City on Friday, October 5 and Saturday, October 6, 2018. 1 additional choreographer will be selected to create a site specific work in collaboration with a Visual Art Installation to be built in Nimbus’ Gallery.

Choreographic Residency

Resident choreographers will receive 20 hours of studio time for rehearsals and are required to do one work-in-progress showing prior to the performance. (Note about space use for resident choreographers: studio times are primarily available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings with some additional weeknight availability.) Resident choreographers will present their work in both performances.

Site Specific Choreographic Opportunity

Site Specific Choreographer must be available to work with Installation Artist 9/1 - 9/16; Final installation/buildout/rehearsal period: 9/30-10/4.10 additional studio hours can be requested by Site Specific Choreographer for generating and rehearsing material.

About the Curators:

Stephanie Daniels has spent recent decades in television, but started out as a visual and performing artist. While pursuing a degree in film and ceramics at UArts in Philadelphia, she danced with Group Motion Berlin. Post graduation she worked with dancer/choreographer Terry Fox and Ishmael Houston Jones, and after a workshop with Jerzy Growkowski, she committed to a performance path. She worked in Paris with Les Ballets Contemporains Karin Waehner, toured with Israel’s Inbal Dance Theater, and landed in Brazil with Clyde Morgan’s Grupo de Dança Contemporanea da Bahia. Back in the US, she worked with Meredith Monk and Ping Chong in NYC and performed with audio performance artist, Terry Fox in Germany. She was a founding member, then Co-Artistic Director of Renegade Theater Company in Hoboken.

Around that time, she was offered a position at USA Network, where she wrote and produced stunts and promos, won a Promax award for US Open Tennis campaign, and was at the launch of SyFy, writing and designing graphics for a weekly half-hour documentary series, produced in coordination with NASA. She went on to serve as Exec Producer of WWOR TV’s Live From Broadway, a series of feature length opening night specials, for which she received an Emmy Award.  She was tapped as Creative Director for the short-lived, but spirited popular arts channel, TRIO, and went on to co-produce three award-winning documentaries, Talking Through Walls: How the Struggle to Build a Mosque United a Community, Worlds of Sound: The Ballad of Folkways, and Finding Amelia for PBS, the Smithsonian Channel, and the Discovery Channel respectively.

Stephanie has written and produced award-winning short films that were screened at film festivals throughout the US, and has exhibited shorts at JCAST and other local venues since 2004. She became a member of Pro Arts in 2011, when Meredith Lippman asked her to show her ceramic art in the Pro Arts Community Exhibit at Parlay Studios for the 2011 JCAST.

She currently works as the Jersey City TV unit’s Creative Director, and director of the film-permitting division, FilmJC. In her spare time (cue hysterical laughter) she is making a short stop-motion animation starring childhood dolls, Barbie and Ken, who while clearly meant for one another, are finding it difficult to consummate the relationship. Stephanie serves on Nimbus Dance Works’ Board of Trustees, and on the Film and Television Committee of the Jersey City Arts Council.

Samuel Pott founded Nimbus Dance Works in 2005 drawing on a deeply held personal belief in the value that the arts can play in bringing people and communities together. Under his direction the company has grown each year adding performances, new repertory, and new community initiatives and projects. Known for creating structured and musical dances that evoke deep-rooted emotional connection, Mr. Pott’s choreography has been shown in New York City and throughout New Jersey, New England and California at venues including the Joyce Theater and the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. He has collaborated with many esteemed contemporary artists including composers Daniel Bernard Roumain, Samson Young, Judd Greenstein, Aaron Parks and visual artists Nicola Lopez and Trudy Miller.

A member of the New Jersey State Arts Council’s Arts in Education roster of artists, he has taught dance at the elementary, high school, college, and professional levels and has served on the faculty of Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts. In 2008 Mr. Pott founded JC Grooves, a program that brings dance to over 2000 Jersey City middle school youth each year through unique and participatory methods. In 2012 he founded the School of Nimbus Dance Works, grounded in the belief that dance can serve as a meeting point for diverse communities for growth towards common values and goals. The School makes high quality dance training available to youth throughout Jersey City regardless of financial background. He is a certified practitioner of the Feldenkrais Method. Mr. Pott received a Choreography Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts in 2008 and was named a Distinguished Teaching Artist by the council in 2012. Mr. Pott was one of 25 arts leaders nationally selected for the Association of Performing Arts Presenters’ (APAP) inaugural Leadership Fellows Program. He serves on the Board of Directors of Dance New Jersey and on the Arts Advisory Council for the Jersey City Board of Education.

Mr. Pott began his dance training at the University of California, Berkeley, and completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1999. As a soloist with the Martha Graham Dance Company, his repertoire included such iconic roles as the Husbandman in Appalachian Spring, Agamemnon in Clytemnestra, and Adam in Embattled Garden. In addition to working with the Martha Graham Dance Company, Mr. Pott has performed as a lead dancer with many ballet and contemporary companies including American Repertory Ballet, the Oakland Ballet, the Savage Jazz Dance Company. Featured roles are from a wide range of dance styles and choreographers including works by Marius Petipa, Martha Graham, Jose Limon, Isadora Duncan, Twyla Tharp, Lar Lubovitch, and theater directors Robert Wilson and Ann Bogart among many others.
