Casting Meredith Monk's "Quarry"

Who: Meredith Monk/The House Foundation


What: "Quarry," an evening-length mosaic of images, movement, dialogue, film, sound, light and music, is a meditation on WWII as seen through the eyes of a sick child. 


Where: Auditions and Rehearsals will take place in New York City


When: Auditions will take place December 3-9, 2018. Rehearsals will begin in Fall 2019.

CHARACTERS
Child: young woman in her 20-30s, petite; playing an 8-year old American child from the 1940s who is sick in bed; excellent singing ability with high extension; strong movement and acting ability

Mother: woman age 30-50, plays multiple roles of the Mother (from the 1940s), Radio Singer, Spirit of War and Dictator #1; strong acting, movement ability, wide range and comedic skill.

Maid: woman age 28-45, sturdy build; plays a caretaker and a confidant to the Child; strong comedic range; strong acting and movement ability; knowledge of Italian, French or Spanish a plus.

Old Testament Man: man age 25-40, smaller build, long hair and beard a plus; plays a figure from biblical times, an Orthodox Jew in 1930s, also plays Dictator #4; wide range and movement ability.

Old Testament Woman: woman age 25-40, medium to tall build; plays a figure from biblical times, an Orthodox Jew in the 1930s, also plays Dictator #2; strong acting and movement ability.

3 Women at Table: women ages 20-40, different builds; American women working during WWII (reminiscent of Rosie the Riveter); also play extensions of the Child; one plays Dictator #5; strong acting and dance background.

Woman with Gray Hair: woman age 50-65, heavy-set and elegant with gray hair; plays Viennese wife of a professor in WWII period; strong acting and movement background with ability to perform clear tasks and gestures while speaking.

Man with Gray Hair: man age 50-65, elegant with gray hair; plays a Viennese professor in WWII, Child's Grandfather; also plays Dictator #3 (reminiscent of Franco); strong acting and movement background with ability to perform clear tasks and gestures while speaking; ability to perform with an Spanish accent.

Dictator: man age 30-45, slender build; plays main Dictator; strong acting and movement ability.

Dictator's Assistant: man age 25-40, strong build; plays silent actor as Dictator #1's assistant/henchman (reminiscent of Rudolf valentine/ Gestapo officer); strong acting and movement ability.

 

* note that while the characters have a specific gender, we welcome folks from all over the gender spectrum to submit.  Also performers of all races are encouraged to submit for any of the roles.
