The AXIS Choreo-Lab will take place June 3-12, 2020 from 10am - 5pm at the Malonga Casquelourd Center (home of AXIS Dance Company), located at 1428 Alice Street, Oakland, CA 94612.  Please note that in order to be considered for the Choreo-Lab, you must be available for the entire duration.

Participating choreographers will receive a $1,000 stipend for their participation.  All out of state participants will also receive a $500 travel stipend to help cover any travel expenses to and from the Lab (such as flight/taxi/train/baggage). Housing will also be provided and arranged directly by AXIS for those who need it.

Marc Brew, Artistic Director and Choreographer of AXIS will serve as Director of the Lab assisted by Nadia Adame, choreographer (Spain). Brew and Adame curated participation in the Choreo-Lab based on participants’ artistic goals, interest in advancing their choreographic practice through the Lab, and potential opportunities to develop and present work moving forward.

The goal of the Choreo-Lab is to develop, refine and advance the artistic skills of disabled choreographers. During the Lab, participants will be led through a creation process stemming from their own concept, collaborating with an integrated cast of performers including AXIS dancers and professional dancers from the local community.

Brew and Adame will teach technique and choreographic fundamentals during the Lab. They will serve as mentors while participants explore their ideas to structure tasks, improvisational scores, generate material, develop accessible language and compositional structures.

All material must be submitted no later than January 15th to be considered for the Choreo-Lab. To apply, visit: axisdance.org/choreolab

If you have questions regarding the Choreo-Lab, please feel free to reach out to AXIS Dance Company's Community Engagement Manager Mark Travis Rivera at MarkTravis@axisdance.org.

The Choreo-Lab is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
