6° Affordable Class Series

Dancer in a shoulder balance Joseph Heitman

Let's face it, open classes in NYC are incredible, but not cheap! Six Degrees Dance's monthly affordable class series, taught by company members and guest artists, is designed to connect dancers and provide them with fun, intimate, encouraging workshop-style classes that won't break their bank account! The series encourages teaching artists to explore concepts and ideas that interest them in order to develop their own practice while offering experiences that are different from traditional open classes. Classes are $10 and all proceeds go toward booking space and paying teachers.

Come dance with us on February 22 10:30-12 at Battery Dance

February's class will be taught by Artistic Director Cecly Placenti

Cecly Placenti (BFA Montclair State University; M.A. New York University) approaches dance making with the belief that the contribution of the individual benefits the group, and results in a body of work reflective of the sum of its parts. Cecly is the Artistic Director of Six Degrees Dance, Senior Contributor and Editor for the Dance Enthusiast, and dance educator at The School at Columbia University. She has been choreographing in NYC for 15 years and her work has been presented at Ailey Citygroup Theater, Dixon Place, The Tank, Mark Morris Dance Center, and Queens Theater, among others. Her film work has been shown in Colorado and New York, and her annual Six Degrees of Separation showcase has brought together artists from New Jersey, Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island.

Class Description:

In this session, dancers will witness and embody the movement signatures of others and reflect back what they notice in their own bodies and with their own unique style. Class will consist of a warm up, guided improvisation, partner work, and a phrase dancers will explore, distill, and augment. In this way, participants will try on the innate movement signatures of others and offer embodied feedback while enhancing their kinesthetic awareness and engagement.
