Posting Title:?Seeking Modern Improv / Butoh improv / Circle Dancer for Immersive Art-Tech Ritual (Honorarium + Film Cut + Code Access)
Description:?We are seeking 1–2 dancers (modern, butoh, pole, or circle dance background) for a live immersive performance inspired by Japanese aesthetics and ritual movement, integrating real-time IR tracking, AI text/sound generation, and generative projection mapping using TouchDesigner. You’ll be performing slow, intentional movement in dialogue with projection systems—becoming the medium through which light, text, and mist are summoned. Description:?Legacies of Liminalities is an immersive art/technology performance salon and meet-up exploring the confluence of Japanese aesthetic philosophy, modern dance, and real-time generative technologies.
Performance Context:
Location: Ideal Glass Studios July 29, 5-7 pm. 9 W 8th St, New York, NY 10011
please contact Phillip.baldwin@gmail.com
Inspired by the aesthetics of wabi-sabi, ma, y?gen, and Shinto animism, the performances use TouchDesigner, IR camera mapping, and AI-generated visuals and soundscapes to transduce dancer gestures and breath into ephemeral projections—turning movement into ambient kanji, ink fogs, and poetic ghosts. Here’s a complete breakdown of your concept into:
TouchDesigner + VR/IR system project pipeline
Integration of 6 Japanese aesthetics into immersive passthrough dynamics
Deep unpacking of 'animistic UI' philosophy
Critique of diffusion model aesthetics as “contingency overload contra STEM a priori” Participants will engage directly as co-creators—generating visuals, triggering real-time poetic cinema through spoken prompts, and influencing a media-dance piece performed by 3 live dancers interacting with a custom environment built from code patches inspired by classic Japanese texts (Tanizaki, Musashi, haiku, ukiyo-e, manga, cyberpunk). This is not a passive viewing, but an active experience in an immersive "floating world" of cross-temporal creation.
Join us for a two-hour hybrid salon and performance lab exploring the recursive soul of AI and movement, guided by the deep currents of Japanese aesthetics and their echoes in global technological culture. Three dancers, six laptops, two VR headsets, and generative sound/image systems (Max/MSP, TouchDesigner, JavaScript, Experiments with Google) form a responsive network — a playground for real-time feedback between body, code, image, and sound.
Participants will move between immersive demos, code stations, and live discussion. The session culminates in a multi-layered improvisation, where dancers interface with AI avatars, woodblock overlays, and reactive systems. Hosted and narrated by Professor Baldwin, this salon is infused with the spirit of sake, conversation, and revelation — from wabi-sabi to techno-rhizome.
