Dance Teacher - Maternity Leave Substitute

Dates of Employment: January 5 - May 21, 2025

Newark Academy is seeking a dedicated and experienced Dance Teacher to serve as a

maternity leave substitute during the Spring Semester. This individual will be responsible for

teaching a range of middle and upper school dance classes, supervising student choreography

projects, and coordinating the culminating Dance Concert in May. The ideal candidate will bring

strong classroom management, choreography, and performance production skills, as well as a

collaborative spirit.

 

Primary Responsibilities

Daytime Teaching, 8:00 am - 2:30 pm

Teach four sections of dance, including: 6th Grade, 8th Grade, 9th and 10th Grade Intermediate / Advanced Dance, 11th and 12th Grade IB (International Baccalaureate) Dance

Choreograph one piece for each middle school class and one to two pieces for each upper school class

6th Grade Co-Advisor

 

After-School Commitments, after 2:30 pm

Coach Middle School Dancers as a winter sport, Monday - Thursday, 2:30–3:30 pm in January and February

Hold auditions for student-choreographed works Monday, March 9th, 3:30–5:30 pm and collaborate with student choreographers to finalize and publish cast lists.

Supervise daily student choreography rehearsals, Monday - Friday, 2:30–5:30 pm in April and May

Coordinate with student choreographers and the Technical Director to schedule and run technical rehearsals after school during the week of May 11th

Design lighting for personal choreography and support student choreographers in developing lighting designs with the Technical Director.

Lead dress rehearsals after school on Monday, May 18th and Tuesday, May 19th

Oversee and support the Dance Concert on Wednesday, May 20th, including a school-day performance and evening concert at 7:00pm.

 

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Dance, Performing Arts, or related field (Master’s preferred).

Prior teaching experience with middle and high school students.

Strong knowledge of dance technique, choreography, and production.

Ability to supervise student-led creative work and provide constructive feedback.

Excellent organizational and communication skills.

Experience with lighting design and/or performance production preferred.

 

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation is $1300 per week .
