This class introduces contemporary dancers to the rhythm, groove, and mindset of hip hop movement. We begin by breaking down the foundations of b-boying, popping, and locking- not to learn a new vocabulary right away, but to strip it back and focus on the essentials: bounce, groove, and the unique connection to the beat.

The warm-up is playful and direct: instead of “exercises,” we dive right into dancing, exploring how the body naturally responds to music (after all, do you really warm up before going to a party?). From there, depending on the level of the group, I introduce increasingly complex and iconic movements from the styles. These elements are then woven into a short combination, allowing dancers to put everything in context and feel how hip hop and funk can expand their contemporary practice.

Nicolas Fiery, one of the first Popping dancers ever contracted by the Metropolitan Opera, brings his international performance experience straight into the studio. Originally from France, he trained in theater and dance with Arts en Mouvements, cultivating a unique blend of Funky Styles, Hip Hop, Jazz, and Modern techniques. He’s earned multiple awards in France for both Jazz and Locking, and later moved to New York to continue his training — graduating with Honors from The Ailey School and working directly with pioneers of Funky Styles.

Nicolas has performed works by acclaimed choreographers including Alvin Ailey, Darrel Moultrie, Earl Mosley, Yuko Kamada, and more, and has danced with companies such as Step One Dance Company, ACPW, and Pajarillo Pinta’o.

As a teacher, he’s known for creating a fun, empowering space where dancers get to explore musicality, storytelling, and honest movement — from beginners to seasoned pros. He has taught across the Tri-State Area and throughout Europe, inspiring dancers of all ages to move with confidence and joy.
