Call for Latine Choreographers to develop new work
Steven Pisano
"Un-choreographed"
Tabula Rasa Dance Theater (TRDT), led by Artistic Director Felipe Escalante, will present “Un-Choreographed,” an anthology of dance featuring new work from choreographers of Latin American descent, for two evenings in May 2026.
The intention of “Un-Choreographed” is to explore, through the lens of heritage, culture, and corporeality, the lived experiences of the Latine diaspora in 2026. Any interpretation of this theme is welcome in proposals from prospective choreographers. Applications are due by 01/18/2026. Successful applicants will be notified by email before 02/01/2026. To apply, please use this link: https://forms.gle/4Hm6LGJCfg8fgmZ77
We are currently accepting applications from Latine choreographers to join the project, which will include:
Developing new work on project dancers;
Collaborating closely with Escalante and the company’s full creative team, and;
Presenting their work as part of TRDT’s “Un-Choreographed” performances
The process for invited choreographers will include:
Up to 30 hours of dedicated rehearsal space;
Professional photography and video documentation of their work;
Two performance opportunities at the end of the incubation period in a professional theater venue in New York City, and;
Access to a professional lighting designer and tech crew, including stage managers
More Details:
Invited choreographers will create on the project’s dance artists. Work must be designed for two to ten artists (no solos, no groups larger than 10).
Choreographers who also wish to dance can participate as well, either in their own work or in the work of other invited choreographers, for an extra stipend.
Participants will receive consultations and advice from TRDT’s collaborating professionals in choreography, direction, costumes, and lighting.
Compensation:
Each invited choreographer will receive a stipend of $1,200 upon completion of the project (additional compensation provided if dancing as well)
Logistics:
Rehearsals will take place over the course of four to six weeks in April and May, three days a week, 2-to-3 hours per day. We are seeking fully committed individuals who can attend all rehearsals and bring their unique choreographic vision to life. Exact schedule will be settled once all project participants are selected. Please note that, although we have done our best to outline all particulars here, project parameters may shift slightly as we navigate the complex infrastructure of the arts in NYC.
