Casting Dancer for NYU Student Film Assignment

A bird trapped inside a cage. Its condition evokes unease, oppression, and anxiety, symbolizing a state of restricted existence. Youtube

This project explores the tension between confinement and freedom through the metaphor of a caged bird. The contrast between interior and exterior spaces forms the symbolic structure of the film: the interior represents restriction, anxiety, and suspended life, while the exterior suggests movement, breath, and vitality. Through the body of a dancer—who embodies the bird struggling to survive—the film reflects on how life and beauty persist even under conditions of constraint.

The dancer will embody the movement and emotional state of a bird through physical performance. A brief movement direction will be provided, but performers are also encouraged to interpret and improvise based on their own understanding of the concept.

No audition is required—only a short previous dance video is needed. Current students or graduates in related fields are not required to submit one.

Note: This is a student project. The role is non-union and unpaid. Compensation will be provided in the form of meals on set and a copy of the completed film once it becomes available.

Time & Location: May 29 / 30 / 31 (afternoons) Midtown & Lower Manhattan, NYC
