Dance in Evolution: Five Works in Progress

Featuring Choreography by Katherine Bahena- Benitez, Madison Hicks, Isaiah Newby, Nattie Trogdon + Hollis Bartlett and Stephanie Shin.

Returning to the 14Y’s long history of dance creation and performance, we are excited to welcome five choreographers/dancers to our 2024 Dance Residency this February.

This showcase is the culmination of a three-week artist-in-residency program featuring the exploration of different themes, concepts, and contemporary dance genres.

Katherine Bahena- Benitez

JOTA, meaning gay, is a word of empowerment meant to liberate those of the guilt in being raised in the Catholic Church.

Madison Hicks

Accumulating little moments, is a contemporary dance duet that explores the complexity of the human condition touching on themes of toxicity, guilt, dependability, corruption, redemption, and sacrifice.

Isaiah Newby

Simulation

Within the bounds of our “reality,” how do we break out of the “simulation,” the world we function in? Is it by drawing back our layers and shedding our forward-facing selves? Onstage, we seek to uncover and understand what it’s like to live and break out of the simulation.

Nattie Trogdon + Hollis Bartlett

Fallacies’

Fallacies’ is a movement work of reference that culls known dances from pop culture and bodily memory to live in the space between replication and translation.

Stephanie Shin

On the subject of bananas

On the subject of bananas explores the weight and absurdity of the word “banana,” a pejorative term used to describe Asian Americans – yellow on the outside, white on the inside.
