On May 15th at Dixon Place, we present a new production by Aalokam Dance Company’s founder and choreographer, Bharathi Penneswaran, called “Aval(she/her) – Unabashedly Herself.” 

Aval(she/her) is a three-part narrative that draws on epics and mythology to relate untold stories and complex characterization. The three protagonists presented in Aval – Ahalya, Draupadi, and Kalika are rarely attributed. It’s an attempt to showcase a range of human emotions, like revenge, lust and desire, and arrogance, that contradict the stereotypical portrayal of these women as chaste and proper.
