Breathing, Posture, and Sound virtual workshop
Company: NYU Langone's Harkness Center for Dance Injuries
Venue: ZOOM through Harkness Center for Dance Injuries
Location: New York, NY
Breathing, Posture, and Sound: Creating Stability and Calm in the Body and Mind for Increasing Freedom to Move
Instructor: Dr. Sarah Plumer-Holzman, PT, DPT
Description: Posture and breath are common themes of instruction for the dancer, yet “good posture” can have different meanings in different populations of dancers. Additionally, dancers experience high levels of stress during training periods, performance seasons, and in between professional engagements, which can further influence a dancer’s breathing and posture. This virtual workshop will explore the function of posture for breathing, sound production, stabilization for movement, and building mental calm and clarity in the following ways:
-We will learn how the trunk acts as a pressure system with 3 functional diaphragms: the glottis (vocal folds), diaphragm, and pelvic floor
-We will discuss postural cues to optimize alignment for trunk stability, sound, and breathing
-We will learn how the autonomic nervous system works in coordination with breathing, and practice specific techniques to develop calm states of mind
-Finally, we will practice humming techniques to positively influence our nervous system’s function.
The participant will take away succinct practices to include in daily routines and clear guides of the concepts presented to consider for daily use.
