Dancer/choreographer Parijat Desai leads DANCE IN THE ROUND, an inclusive workshop on Garba and Raas—circle dances from Gujarat, India. All abilities and genders welcome, ages 8 to 88.
After an invigorating warm-up, Parijat will offer instruction in basic steps, and a sequence that takes you around the circle.
Garba and Raas are typically played during the autumn Navratri Festival, nine nights of dance and community. DANCE IN THE ROUND is about offering more opportunities for playing Garba-Raas—a unique collective experience of movement and rhythm.
Between each learning segment, there'll be time for all to dance in a large circle. At the end, we'll learn Raas, played with dandiya or wooden sticks.

DANCE IN THE ROUND will be held at Gibney Dance Center, 890 Broadway (between 19th and 20th Streets), 5th Floor, Studio 1.

KID POLICY: This June workshop is oriented to adults, but children are welcome. There's no special instruction for kids, so NOTE: Kids 8 and up must be accompanied by an adult. Children 7 are allowed, but must have at least one adult each with them throughout. We love them, but please keep track of your children!
NOTES FOR ALL:
Comfortable bottoms suggested: Long flaring skirts or loose pants are ideal, and Kurtas are also welcome, but nothing is required. No shoes on dance floor. If your feet need support, please bring a pair of indoor shoes to wear in studio. Bring water.
*We'll provide basic sticks, but if you have decorated dandiya, bring them!
