Dancing Beyond 60 With Strength, Stability, and Confidence
A professional development course for dancers, dance educators, and healthcare practitioners by NYU Langone’s Harkness Center for Dance Injuries.
Online lectures are prerequisites for an in-person component at Harkness Center for Dance Injuries on Sunday, August 17, 2025 (1:30 - 3:30 PM). Participants not attending on August 17 may purchase only the DanceMedU lectures.
In this two-part course for healthcare providers and dance professionals, we will focus on the needs of dancers approaching and beyond the age of 60. Part I will be pre-recorded lectures on our DanceMedU platform covering physiological considerations such as hormones and muscle mass; balance and proprioception; nutrition; strength; and self-advocacy in healthcare settings. Part II will be an in-person workshop at the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries: healthcare professionals will learn testing and interventions appropriate for clinical settings addressing this population; and dance professionals will learn tests and exercises they can apply in their training and performance. Additionally, throughout this course, we will incorporate psychosocial aspects of wellness for our seasoned dancers who prioritize longevity both in career and life.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this program, participants will acquire information and practical knowledge to:
-Identify physiological changes that occur in individuals approaching and beyond the age of 60 within the musculoskeletal, hormonal, cardiovascular, and neurological systems
-Apply evidenced-based tests for strength, balance, proprioception, and cardiovascular fitness to the mature dancer’s needs
-Learn dietary strategies to target the common nutritional needs of the mature dancer
-Combine concepts for participants to design programs to maximize training, performance, and longevity in life and career.
-Learn strategies to build bridges of communication to implement these aims for longevity in the mature dancer between healthcare providers, teachers, and mature dancers.
