Learn Indian Temple dance Odissi

Want to learn how to move like the sculptures on the walls of Indian temples? Join Radhika Jha, a performer and teacher who will offer classes in a unique movement style taught to her by the late Guru Surendranath Jena, at the Consulate General of India, E64th Street, New York from 6-7.30 pm every Friday. Inspired by the sculptures in the temples of Orissa and his own knowledge of tantric practices in the villages, Guru Surendranath Jena created a novel style of movement that blends yoga and dance movement. The class is open to beginners and those with training in any style of dance. In the class, we will learn the basic movements of the Jena style and two of his beautiful choreographies as well as working on creating our own dance pieces inspired by Jena's choreography. Radhika Jha has studied several styles of Indian classical dance as well as Butoh and modern dance. She has taught, done workshops and performed extensively in Japan, China and Europe. In 1997 she was nominated a cultural ambassador by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.
