Monk in Pieces, a film by Billy Shebar
Company: New York Public Library for the Performing Arts
Venue: Library for the Performing Arts
Location: New York, NY
Meredith Monk – composer, performer, theater director, filmmaker – is one of the great interdisciplinary artists of our time, yet her profound cultural influence is largely unrecognized. With Monk’s music at its center, and featuring interviews with Björk and David Byrne, Monk in Pieces is a mosaic that mirrors the structure of Monk’s own work, illuminating her wildly original vocabulary of sound and imagery. In the film’s final chapters, Monk faces mortality. For 60 years, she has directed and performed in all of her music theater works. What will happen to such singular work after she is gone? Monk in Pieces was an official selection and Teddy Award nominee at the 2025 Berlinale, and is distributed by Zeitgeist Films and Kino Lorber.
