NEXT: New Voices, Shared Stories

A shot from the piece Narcissus.

At a time when so many are being targeted based on where they come from and who they are,  an evening of dance by three up-and-coming choreographers will share stories of immigration, identity, empathy, and understanding.

“NEXT: New Voices, Shared Stories”  spotlights three emerging choreographers - Danielle Diniz, Will Ervin, Miaotian Sun - at a moment when their careers are on the rise, and makes their work accessible to New Yorkers with tickets starting at $25 that include performance and Q+A with the choreographers (March 13) and performance and reception (March 14).

The program features

Danielle Diniz's A Place for Us, which traces her grandmother's emigration from Mexico and her grandfather's journey from Portugal through ballet, Latin dance, and theater;

Will Ervin's Narcissus, a fusion of modern, contemporary, and street dance examining how race and identity shape self-perception;

Chinese choreographer Miaotian Sun's Echoes Between Us, which reimagines the discovery of Sanxingdui, a Bronze Age civilization whose artifacts upended everything scholars thought they knew about ancient China;

Mar y Tierra by Bessie Award winner Pedro Ruiz, whose choreography the New York Times called "an explosion of sleek and sensuous pure dance."

The cast includes Colombian-born Elisa Toro Franky, who trained at Miami City Ballet and has performed with the Dance Theater of Harlem; Emily Masia, whose credits include performing Alvin Ailey's 'Memoria' with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; and Damontae Hack, who has worked with Solange Knowles and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.

Stay after the show:

Friday: Q&A with choreographers and dancers

Saturday: reception with light food and beverages
