“Oni Oni” is a poem based on an Afro-Cuban mythology, called patakins, written and directed by Danys "La Mora" Pérez. The oral tradition of folk -based stories, also known as patakins, are essential sources of culture. Through patakins, Cuba creatively informs each generation of the life of the deities that rule over the forces of nature and the efforts of humanity. Oyu Oro dancers and musicians harness their skills and training as interpreters to relay the message of ancient culture to the present society through Cuba's traditional art form: dance song and live music derived from Africa with Cuba's traditional instruments including Bata drums, Conga and Chekere.
This Saturday, we would like to create a space for our community to dig deep into the knowledge of this culture and tradition, which was presented in our premiere from last weekend.
This project is funded, in part, through a Seed Fund for Dance grant from the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone Development Corporation, thanks to the support of the Mertz Gilmore Foundation. It is also funded, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature, and supported by the Center for Traditional Music and Dance as well as the New Heritage Group.
