Shared Evening: Garnet Henderson and Anna Rogovoy at HERE Arts Center

Anna Rogovoy and Pareena Lim dancing Julie Lemberger and Liz Schneider-Cohen

Garnet Henderson and Anna Peretz Rogovoy present an evening of four dances, two by Henderson (Our Bodies Get Too Far Apart and Address), and two by Rogovoy (WEST and EAST). The program features performances by Henderson and Rogovoy as well as Rebecca Hadley and Pareena Lim. This evening represents the beginning of a joint venture between Henderson and Rogovoy as choreographers working with a mutual interest in the creation and exploration of rigorous and articulate dance works. The program is entirely conceived, created, and performed by women.

Rogovoy’s WEST and EAST, both trios, contend with themes of waylaid plans, liminal identity, and cooperative investigation via a movement vocabulary that draws on the dancers’ shared experiences with classical and contemporary movement forms such as ballet and Cunningham technique.

Henderson’s Address is a solo that embodies and challenges assumptions about women, their bodies, and what women should do with their bodies. The dance explores the consequences of living and performing under these expectations, and the difference between being looked at and being seen. Our Bodies Get Too Far Apart is a dance about two people trying to be more than they are.
