Tap Dance Masterclass with Margaret Morrison

Margaret Morrison Tap Dance Masterclass Sunday March 29th from 12:30-2pm "Juanita Pitts: In the Steps of Our Foremothers"

Juanita Pitts: In the Steps of Our Foremothers

Mixed level class for advanced beginner tap dancers and up (appropriate for dancers already familiar with the rhythm time step and BS Chorus).

Margaret Morrison teaches newly reconstructed tap choreography and rhythm tap styling from Juanita Pitts’ 1945 film, rare footage of an African American woman hoofer, dancing in sturdy, flat shoes and a sharp, tailored suit. We’ll also look at video footage and discuss Pitts’ career and aesthetic detailed in Morrison’s newly published research chapter, “Juanita Pitts: Race, Gender, and the Female Hoofer.” And we’ll celebrate Women’s History and Black History by honoring the African American tap foremothers who thrilled audiences across the country by laying down the iron.
