On this opening night of our summer season, we are thrilled to announce Sabrina Barrios (Brazil)as the inaugural winner of Broadway Stages’ Residency Award @ Kingsland Wildflowers: Her site-specific installation, Rise of the Missing Planet, will remain on view on Upper Meadow throughout the evening and the entire outdoor season.
Sabrina on her piece, Rise of the Missing Planet: “In this three-part site-specific art installation, the work brings forward the story of Tiamat, the Goddess of Creation for the Matriarchy, the Goddess of Chaos for the Patriarchy. Its interpretation depends on who tells the story. In this battle, Tiamat and Apsu (The Sun) were the primordial celestial bodies that gave birth to the planets in our solar system. Their children fought against them to rule the Cosmos. Tiamat fought alone several male Gods, who broke her into two parts, the first resulting in what we know as the asteroid belt; the other, became our Earth. After this battle, no other female planet was allowed in the pantheon of the Gods. Until this day, when we look at ancient cosmology (such as Sumerian), we see they knew of a planet we haven’t heard of; and wonder about its fate.”

TOMORROW, directed by Nicole von Arx, is a new 20-minute installation work created on the theme of Water.
It combines dance, music, a pre-recorded voice, and video projections. curated by CreateART
A few weeks ago, Nicole von Arx asked her childhood friend, and environmental scientist, Melissa Gomis, about her thoughts on climate change. The work weaves together her honest and personal answers with the performance of three exceptional dancers. Navigating between hope and anxiety, the performers float, sway and tumble as if transforming from water to fractured ice. The show takes place on an enormous and gorgeous rooftop surrounded by a sewage treatment plant, a landfill, the Kingsland Wildflowers, dreamy views of Manhattan, and one of the most polluted waters in the US - The Newton Creek. This juxtaposition between art and literal trash invites the audience to question: Will the world we know today be the same as the one of tomorrow?
Created in collaboration with the dancers, Michael Greenberg, Maddy Wright, and Caitlin Taylor, TOMORROW is a meditative moment and at the same time - a call to action.
