What is Revealed

Solo Dancer Entwined with Mesh Fabric Jhalak Dance Company "What is Revealed" Photo: Alden Fukushima

“What is Revealed” is an innovative pop-up gallery exhibit and live dance performance. The production features a painting series alongside live dance choreography and improvisation sketches. The installation performance is devised by Kara Jhalak Miller with Jhalak Dance Company performers Sami L.A. Akuna, Tina Chan, Mignon Gillen, Cy Higashi, Lance Sabado, Terry Slaughter, and Katelyn Wyatt. The dances are in response to and in collaboration with visual artist Alberte Bernier and her painting series “Leak” with an interactive performance by Jannie Wolff. The performance is the subject of a short dance art film created by Larry Asakawa.

The project has been several years in development due to the ebb and flow of the pandemic. The project was initially generated in 2017 when Miller visited Bernier’s NYC art studio to see her “Leak” painting series. In early 2020 the first excerpt of the live performance was presented at ArtZone in Honolulu. Work-in-progress showings and performances have since been shared in 2022 at the Honolulu Downtown Art Center, the Hawai‘i State Art Museum (HiSAM), and a premiere of the full production at the KOA Theater on Oahu. The project culminates in a live performance in New York City at the ChaShaMa Gallery 1155 6th Avenue on June 9 and 10 at 7pm.

The performance events are free and open to the public.
