Works & Process Announces Open Call for 2026-27 Residencies
Works & Process, a non-profit performing arts organization that champions artists and their creative process from studio to stage, announces an open application for week-long, out-of-town residencies for NYC-based choreographers and dance companies.
Each year, Works & Process produces more than 25 creative residencies via a network of over a dozen partner venues in five states. Artists and projects are curated and – as of 2025 – selected through an open call. Residency support can span the entire life of a project, from first explorations in the studio to final rehearsals for the premiere, and even touring.
A cornerstone of its support for the creative process, in tandem with a commitment to building collaboration across the arts ecosystem, Works & Process residencies center artists and their specific needs, providing them with focused time and space that is critical to develop work. To date, Works & Process has produced 100+ residencies that have supported 700+ artists, incubating works that have been recognized with Bessie Awards, National Dance Project grants, and toured nationally and internationally with the U.S. State Department.
Works & Process supports creative process for companies of eight (or fewer) artists for seven-day residencies. Each artist receives an industry-leading fee of $175 per day ($1,225 per week). Residencies also include 24/7 studio access, on-site housing, a travel stipend, and health insurance enrollment access. Awarded residencies will take place between October 2026 – May 2027 and may be used to start a new project or continue developing an existing work.
Applications will be accepted from March 24-April 21, 2026 at 5PM EST, or close earlier if the submission limit of up to 300 applications is reached. Works & Process will award up to 15 residencies, and all applicants will be notified by June 30, 2026.
Information on applying, including eligibility and application guidelines, is at www.worksandprocess.org/residencies.
“One of the true highlights of the residency was having the dancers live together in the house that was provided for them. This created a wonderfully collaborative environment and allowed them to build deeper connections with one another outside the studio.”
– Kotoe Kojima-Noa, Artistic Coordinator, NJ Ballet, Works & Process residency at ArtYard
“I LOVED having the whole day, from morning to night to think and work in different modes. I started the morning conditioning my body, spent the afternoon rehearsing relentlessly with the dancers, and closed the evening working on lighting design, editing audio/video, and having some quality time with the company members.”
– Sun Kim, Director/Choreographer of Sun Kim Dance Theatre, Works & Process residency at Modern Accord Depot
“It felt like a week in paradise, and the dancers and I will remember it for a very long time!”
– Miro Magliore, Artistic Director of New Chamber Ballet, Works & Process residency at The Campus at Marlboro Music

About Works & Process
Championing performing artists and their creative process from studio to stage, Works & Process features artists from the world’s largest organizations and emerging new talent. With a unique program format that blends artist discussion and performance highlights, Works & Process encourages audiences to spectate, participate, and continue the conversation beyond the stage. Founded in 1984 by Mary Sharp Cronson at Guggenheim New York, Works & Process has evolved into an independent non-profit organization with an extensive network of residency partners and presenting partners, including Guggenheim Bilbao, Guggenheim New York, National Sawdust, and The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts Jerome Robbins Dance Division. During the summer, Works & Process curates and presents free outdoor dance programs with Manhattan West and City Parks Foundation’s SummerStage.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Works & Process pioneered the bubble residency model, and this has grown into an expansive program with a network of over a dozen partner venues in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Vermont. To date, Works & Process has produced 100+ residencies. Projects that have been incubated through these residencies -- and in many cases commissioned and premiered by Works & Process -- have been recognized with Bessie Awards, National Dance Project grants, and toured nationally and internationally with the U.S. State Department.
