World Dance Festival: Dancing Across Cultural Borders

Balinese, Kathak, Odissi, and Flamenco Dancers Provided by the artists

Lotus Music & Dance and Robert Browning Associates are proud to present the 7th annual World Dance Festival: Dancing Across Cultural Borders, featuring master artists from 4 dance traditions.  Featured on the program will be Balinese Music and Dance  (Dharma Swara), Trinayan Odissi Dance Collective (Bani Ray), Pradhanica Music & Dance Company (Jin Won) and Flamenco y Sol  (Sol La Argentinita). 

Dharma Swara will present a program of sophisticated percussion-based gamelan music, Gender Wayang, performed by Joseph Mellin and Victoria Mellin along with the highly refined movement vocabulary of ceremonial and celebratory Balinese dances. Trinayan Odissi Dance Collective, led by Bani Ray, will tell the story of how Gandhi became the “soul force warrior” who freed India from British rule through a new choreography incorporating Odissi, Kathak and Flamenco.  Jin Won, gifted Kathak dancer and tabla player, will take kathak rhythms to new heights exploring rhythm and sound through her creative choreography.  She will be accompanied by Mike Lukshis, Tabla and Indrajit Roy-Chowdhury, Sitar. Flamenco y Sol will take us on a deep dive into the fiery rhythms and soul-searching song of flamenco featuring guest artists Elisabeth Torras, Ricardo Osorio, Paloma Rios (dancers)  accompanied by Juan Pedro Jimenez, guitar, Sol La Argentinita, dancer/singer and Lucho Perez,  percussion. 

The program will feature brief presentations from the artists about each style, and ASL interpretation will be provided.
