Dr. Patricia A. Rowe, as a pioneer for dance in higher education, was an innovating force in the field for 50 years, and is known best as the chairperson of the NYU Department of Dance and Dance Education, which she founded in 1970. She was instrumental in the 20-year effort to achieve dance certification for K-12 in the State of New York and, at the other end of the spectrum, in fostering dance degrees in undergraduate (BS and BA) and graduate (MA, MS, Ed.D., Ph.D., and DA) majors across the spectrum of dance. She served as founding member and president of The Congress on Research in Dance and as chair of CORD's editorial board, editing its annual publications from 1970 through 1986.

The scope of her influence was international with faculty abroad reliant on her input and counsel in developing programs previously unimagined at their institutions. From her central position at the intersection of dance research, dance education, performance and choreography, dance history and criticism, anthropology of human movement, creative arts, dance therapy, and dance activism, Patricia Rowe remains an inspirational force for those she trained and for her many colleagues and friends both in the dance world and beyond.
