WHITE WAVE CELEBRATES THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL

WHITE WAVE’s Artistic Director Young Soon Kim founded the DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL in 2001, and presented the first event a scant month after 9/11. Now a decade on, the Festival is a vital component of New York’s contemporary dance scene, which features young artists who have become important figures in emerging dance. WHITE WAVE has presented over 1200 companies and 5000 performers from over a dozen countries to an audience of more than 52,000 people... so far.

Presented in conjunction with the 2010 DUMBO ARTS FESTIVAL, a multi-disciplinary celebration of the neighborhood’s diverse artistic community, the DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL features exciting work from dance artists in Brooklyn’s vibrant contemporary dance scene, on a bill with rising choreographers from throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. There are no reservations or advance ticket sales, all seats are first come, first served and all Festival performances are presented FREE/pay-what-you-will.

GALA Opening Night:
WHITE WAVE celebrates the first decade of the DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL with a GALA OPENING NIGHT benefit on September 23rd at 7pm. The evening boasts an exciting program of contemporary dance from Festival artists, hosted by a surprise celebrity guest! An after-party will feature a sumptuous buffet, live music and dancing to the music of the ever-popular Bossa Nova Beatniks. Tickets are $100 and $250 for VIP seating, and all proceeds support WHITE WAVE. Ticket information is available at 718-855-8822 and info@whitewavedance.com. Come and join us for an evening of art and celebration!

Outdoor and Site-Specific Performances:
The Festival weekend is full! On Saturday, September 25th WHITE WAVE pushes the envelope by presenting a series of site-specific works along the Pier 1 waterfront. Designed to be interdisciplinary, these pieces are collaborations between choreographers, composers, and live musicians. From small, intimate spaces (a park bench) to grand ones (the sweeping staircase at Granite Prospect) these collaborations all interact with the beautiful DUMBO waterfront. The times and locations of the Site-Specific performances will be posted on WHITE WAVE’s website and Facebook page, and we will live-tweet them as they happen! On Sunday, September 26th WHITE WAVE presents outdoor performances on the Brooklyn Bridge Park lawn: From 12-3pm teachers in WHITE WAVE’S Kids Can Dance education program will lead a free class session of Hip Hop/B-boy and Modern Dance on the waterfront for kids of all ages. Then twelve Festival artists take the stage for a family-friendly program featuring the best in contemporary dance of 2010.

The 2010 DUMBO DANCE FESTIVAL comes to a close Sunday, September 26th with a GRAND FINALE performance on scenic Fulton Ferry Landing, which overlooks Manhattan, framed by water and sky. The GRAND FINALE will feature renowned dance companies including Jennifer Muller/the Works, Italy’s Enzo Celli and Botega Dance and WHITE WAVE Young Soon Kim Dance Company, all performing against the dazzling backdrop of New York City at night.
