Advocacy Alert: Good News on DCA Budget

Dear NYC Dance Community:

I write with enthusiasm to report on the Department of Cultural Affairs’ (DCA) FY 2012 expense budget.

The approved budget is $152 million. This includes a baseline of $100.1 million, a one-time restoration of $43 million, $3.8 million in one-time member item allocations and $5.1 million for the Cultural After-School Adventures program (CASA), a program funded by the City Council. For FY 2012, $31.9 million is allocated to Program groups. $110 million is allocated to the Cultural Institutions Group (CIG).

This budget represents an enormous increase from preliminary FY 2012 figures as well as growth over the FY 2011 budget, which closes at $143.7 million in City funds, including $27.2 million for the Programs groups, $106.8 million for the CIG, and $4.97 million for CASA.

This is a strong sign of support from an administration and City Council which see the importance of NYC dance—over 5,000 dancers and 1,200 dance making entities—to local government, to jobs, to tourism, to education and to the socio-economy.

Thank you for joining Dance/NYC in advocating for this budget. Read Dance/NYC’s testimony and feedback from the field here: http://www.dancenyc.org/resources/knowledge-base/advocacy/

Please also join me in thanking New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Cultural Affairs Committee Chair Jimmy Van Bramer, Finance Chair Domenic Recchia and your City Councilmember for the Council’s work on this difficult budget. And thank you to Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Commissioner Kate D. Levin for their leadership and all they do for dance and culture.

Happy 4th of July and onward for dance!
