What are some of the essential requirements to keep dance alive and growing?

Fall for Dance presents commissioned world premieres alongside pieces that are vital to preserving dance’s history. Alicia Graf Mack performs Geoffrey Holder’s 1968 Come Sunday in Program 4, which the choreographer originally created for his wife, Carmen de Lavallade. “I’m sure this piece will be performed next to something very new,” says Graf Mack. “It’s important to recognize that even though the piece is older, it resonates in the same way that current works do.”

How would you describe the state of dance today?

Fall for Dance embodies what the dance world is today: an extraordinarily wide variety of world premieres, classic works, and everything in between from well-known and up-and-coming artists, local and international.

What is the most important thing you are contributing to the world of dance?

Fall for Dance is the first time Swedish company Skånes Dansteater performs in the United States, with the US Premiere of Dare to Wreck in Program 3. “In the duet we experience two different bodies and a wheelchair,” says Madeleine Månsson, performer and co-choreographer. “This is not the norm when we talk about the dancing body. But this is what society looks like. I will never be able to turn off my differences, and dance must follow. I want to reach a point where differences are the norm.”

Favorite Venue:

City Center Choreography Fellow Caleb Teicher says: “Performing at City Center has become like touching homebase for me. Fall for Dance is the show I get to invite all my friends to because it’s affordable.” See his world premiere commission, the newly expanded Bzzzz on Program 1!
