DANCEWAVE ENSEMBLE COACH

POSITION: Dancewave Company/Young Movers & Young Performers Ballet Ensemble Coach

REPORTS TO: Executive/Artistic Director (ED) and Coach Coordinator

SALARY: $16/hour

HOURS: Part-Time Position September –June 2016

Alternating weeks: Tuesday 5:30-7, Friday 5:30-6:30.  Additional times as needed for coach meetings and performances; Coach Training in September; Regular Coach Check-ins and Professional Development sessions. All rehearsals take place in Brooklyn.  

 

Dancewave Company productions in Fall Semester:  Holiday Fiesta – Saturday December 5th 2014

Spring Semester productions: Dancewave School  Performances, Spring Celebration and other outside performances: May 20 and 21, 2016

ABOUT DANCEWAVE’S YOUNG MOVERS ENSEMBLE AND YOUNG PERFORMERS BALLET ENSEMBLE AND THE DANCEWAVE COMPANIES: Dancewave’s Performance Ensembles (10-13 years old) are stepping stones to the Dancewave Company membership. The Dancewave Companies I & II are dance troupes of teenagers, ages 14-18, selected by audition from all over New York City. Our companies and ensembles provide a professional environment for young people that both challenges and encourages them to excel. The Ensembles and Companies work with emerging and professional choreographers on groundbreaking work that expands the horizons of both the kids, and the modern dance and ballet world giving young dancers an opportunity to understand and experience a diverse array of styles and artistic viewpoints.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Dancewave seeks a Dancewave Ensemble Coach to assist both Young Movers Ensemble and Young Performers Ballet Ensembles with artistic, technical, social and emotional aspects of company life. The coach also is responsible for administrative tasks and individual company member assessments and guidance including one on one meetings. Dancewave Coaches work  directly with a Coach Coordinator and Dancewave’s Executive & Artistic Director and Dancewave Company resident choreographers for the year.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Serve as rehearsal assistant and attending company rehearsals and performances

• Learn all choreography and assist dancers in technical and stylistic aspects of the work.

Run rehearsal warmups as needed

Attend coach meetings and professional development sessions

• Communicate regularly with parents, dancers and choreographers about rehearsal and performance                   schedules.

• Address student behavior issues and company conflicts with Coach Coordinator.

• Take regular attendance and report back to Dancewave’s Director of Education weekly.

• Take costume inventory and organize costumes for performances.

 

 

REQUIRED SKILLS & CREDENTIALS:

• Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Dance Education

• Excellent written and oral communication skills

• Excellent organizational skills

• Regular access to email and ability to communicate regularly with company members during the week

• Experience working with teenagers from diverse racial/ethnics and socioeconomic backgrounds

• Deep knowledge of the dance world, particularly both in the modern and ballet fields

• Strong grasp of dance technique training and cognizance of the different dance styles and processes

PREFERRED SKILLS:

• Master’s degree in Dance Education

• Experience with conflict resolution
