Young Dancemakers Company - Summer 2026

Young Dancemakers Company (YDC), entering its 31st season, is a tuition-free summer dance ensemble for New York City public high school students. Each season, dancers (approximately 16-18 participants) collaborate to create original choreography around meaningful themes and perform in free concerts throughout NYC.

For Summer 2026, YDC will create ten original student-choreographed works, as well as one repertory piece set by renowned choreographer Milton Myers. Performances take place in seven theaters across the city between July 29 and August 5, culminating in a finale concert at the Ailey Citigroup Theater on Thursday, August 6, 2026. 

 

Position Overview

The Assistant Costume Designer will collaborate closely with student choreographers and the Lead Costume Designer to design, source, alter, and maintain costumes for the season’s works.

 

Key Responsibilities

-Collaborate with multiple student choreographers to develop costume designs for original dances.

-Construct, purchase, and/or alter costumes using YDC’s existing costume collection and new materials.

-Attend consultations and fittings during rehearsals.

-Support the Lead Costume Designer on repertory and ensemble works.

-Assist with costume organization, maintenance, and repairs throughout the performance run.

 

Schedule & Location

Rehearsals: Rehearsals are Monday-Friday, 11:00 AM–5:00 PM. The Assistant Costume Designer needs to have the flexibility to meet with choreographers and dancers during those hours.

Dates: July 8 – July 29, 2026

Location: Fieldston School, Riverdale (Bronx)

Some additional hours may be required during tech and performance weeks: July 27 – August 6.

 

Qualifications

-Strong sewing and garment construction skills required;

-Experience with costume design, wardrobe, or fashion construction preferred;

-Ability to work collaboratively with teens in an educational, creative environment

-Organized, flexible, and comfortable managing multiple projects at once without compromising on the quality of work;

-A positive attitude and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations;

-The ability to listen and be receptive to feedback;

-Reliable, punctual, and consistent with attendance;

 

Compensation

The hiring rate for this position is $25/hour.
