Play Motion Lab began in an effort to provide affordable classes and workshops as the cost of open classes, workshops, and training for dancers continues to rise unsustainably. It has now expanded as a groundswell and niche space to build community amongst professional dancers actively working in New York, serving over 400+ dancers to date.

Our August session begins with a full-body guided warm up with Play Motion Lab Founding Director, Peter Cheng, tapping into the inherent mobility and extension of the muscles and joints, coupled with bringing sensory and peripheral awareness of moving in space with others.

The second half of the session, led by MISFITS Artistic Director, Dareon Lowe, explores structured improvisation through sudden shifts in timing, direction, and texture, blending contemporary dynamics with hip hop influence.

Dancers will engage with the residue of movement, allowing moments to settle before rupturing into the next. Rooted in cause and effect, the class invites freedom through form, playing with both literal and abstract concepts to challenge physical and imaginative boundaries.

Phrase & floor work will be included, knee pads are encouraged.
